Beef cattle production and nutrition; evaluation of biological and nutritional value of feedstuff for beef and dairy cattle.
Works in the field of Animal Science and Fishery Resources, with an emphasis on fish farming and integrated systems.

Research is conducted in the field of dairy calf metabolism and nutrition, aiming to enhance future milk production potential. Studies involve evaluating colostrum management protocols and the transfer of passive immunity, as well as assessing various feeding practices and liquid and solid diets—and their implications for pre-ruminant metabolism and the transition to a functional ruminant. Additionally, research is carried out to evaluate animal behavior in relation to feeding management, with the goal of reducing stress in young animals during events such as weaning.

My research interests relate to pasture production and management under both cutting and grazing regimes. Primary research efforts focus on forage plant responses to defoliation management, encompassing the applied physiology, morphology, productivity, persistence, and nutritional value of forage grasses and legumes. New materials are evaluated to identify management practices that optimize their use in commercial livestock production systems, while established materials already in use within the industry are studied to expand their potential applications in these systems. The use of models as tools for predicting agronomic responses is also a focus of our research group.

Works in the fields of nutrition, nutritional biochemistry, regulation of intermediary metabolism, nutritional requirements, and the development of mathematical models of nutrient metabolism for growth and lactation. Transfers knowledge regarding animal nutrition primarily to the feed, additive, and cattle nutrition industries.

Beef Cattle Nutrition.

Muscle physiology with an emphasis on growth and changes in skeletal muscle at the molecular (proteomic) and cellular levels—driven by fetal programming, nutrition, metabolic modifiers, management, and genetics—and their interrelationships with stress physiology, which have a potential impact on the organoleptic quality of meat from various species, with a particular focus on red meat. Muscle protein degradation systems and their relationship to meat texture are specifically studied.

Ruminant nutrition, with an emphasis on small ruminants and beef cattle, focusing primarily on the following areas: evaluation of feeds and agro-industrial co-products, nutritional additives, ruminal fermentation, metabolism, digestibility, animal performance, and intensive production systems.

Poultry nutrition. Evaluation of ingredients, evaluation of additives, ileal digestibility, metabolizable energy, and digestible phosphorus.

Dairy cattle nutrition in intensive tropical pasture systems. Beef cattle production in intensive tropical pasture systems. Beef cattle nutrition in feedlot systems. Carbohydrate metabolism and cereal grain processing. Protein metabolism in ruminants. Additives.

Our animal genetics and genomics group at ESALQ/USP is active in cutting-edge research projects for the Brazilian industry (beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and poultry). We maintain international connections with leading research centers across various countries. Our group generally consists of 2–3 PhDs and 6–10 graduate students. Job opportunities for talented recent graduates in animal breeding are excellent at the moment.

Animal Science, with an emphasis on plant-animal-soil-atmosphere interrelationships in pastoral ecosystems. The most frequent terms characterizing their scientific and technological output are: forage plant ecophysiology, pasture management, grazing management, animal productivity, greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable intensification.

Poultry nutrition and feeding, focusing on the nutritional requirements of broiler chickens, the nutritional value of feedstuffs, feed additives for broilers, and poultry gut microbiota and intestinal health.
